Your Brain Is Sabotaging Your Success: The Science Behind Why Smart People Fail at Business

Podcast Episode: Your Brain Is F*cking With Your Success: Real Talk with Tracy Litt

If you’ve ever wondered why you can consume every business strategy course, follow every expert’s advice, and still feel stuck in the same place, this conversation is going to blow your mind.

I sat down with Tracy Litt – founder of The School of Becoming, TEDx speaker, and the woman who literally changed my life with one visualization exercise – to talk about the real reason most entrepreneurs fail. Spoiler alert: it has nothing to do with strategy and everything to do with what’s happening between your ears.

The Identity Prison You Don’t Know You’re In

Here’s the uncomfortable truth that Tracy dropped on us: “I will never grow my impact or my revenue faster than I grow myself.”

Let that sink in for a second. You can have the perfect sales funnel, the most engaging content, and the best product in the world, but if your internal identity doesn’t match your external goals, you’re fighting a losing battle.

“You will only create what is a match for your current identity,” Tracy explained. “So if your current identity doesn’t feel safe being seen, you will not show up consistently online. Therefore, you will not have outcomes of more invitations and sales.”

The Belief-Reality Mirror

This is where it gets really interesting. Tracy can literally predict what someone’s beliefs are just by looking at their reality.

“If I know what your reality is, I can tell you what your beliefs are and I can tell you what your current identity lens is,” she said. “So you’ll never end up outperforming your current identity or those beliefs.”

Think about that for a minute. Your bank account, your client roster, your business success – it’s all a direct reflection of what you believe about yourself at the deepest level.

The 17-Second Success Killer

Here’s where the science gets scary. Tracy shared research showing that when you decide to do something outside your nervous system’s evidence bank – like starting a business – you have about 17 to 29 seconds before fear hijacks your brain.

“Your nervous system is a prediction-making machine. It runs off patterns,” she explained. “So now here you are going, ‘I’m gonna create a brand new unpredictable variable of creating my fabulous, highly serving, super successful digital course business.’ And you’re jazzed and your heart’s open and you’re like, ‘fuck yes.'”

But then this happens:

Your brain scans for evidence: “Has she done this before and lived to tell the tale?” The answer comes back: “No, she has not.” Fear response activated. Thoughts of limitation flood in: “I don’t have time,” “Who am I to do this?” “This will never work.”

“Those thoughts are not even yours,” Tracy revealed. “Those are the thoughts of fear trying to make up any thought it can.”

The Two-Year Paralysis Pattern

Even Tracy, who now runs a seven-figure company and has transformed hundreds of thousands of lives, experienced this pattern. When she first discovered her calling in personal development, she spent two entire years in what she calls “gas and brake” mode.

“On Monday I was like, ‘I’m gonna do this.’ And on Tuesday, ‘Who the fuck do I think I am?’ And I sat back down. And on Wednesday I’d tell my sister, ‘I’m gonna become a coach and da da da.’ And then Friday, absolutely nothing.”

If you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly starting and stopping, getting excited about your business one day and terrified the next, you’re not broken. You’re human. And you’re experiencing exactly what your nervous system is designed to do when faced with the unknown.

The Worthiness Wound That’s Killing Your Income

One of the most profound parts of our conversation was about worthiness. Tracy’s book “Worthy Human” completely changed how I understood the connection between self-worth and business success.

“The unworthiness that we all experience is a lie,” Tracy said. “And if we don’t perceive we are worthy, then we will sabotage and avoid and not allow the greatness that we’re capable of.”

How Unworthiness Shows Up in Business:

  • You don’t make offers with conviction
  • You don’t follow up with potential clients
  • You don’t send invoices promptly
  • You don’t want to receive payment
  • You shrink instead of shine
  • You don’t allow yourself to be visible

“The core of unworthiness is not enoughness,” Tracy explained. “And when we perceive that we are not enough, we do not stand straight, we do not shine, we do not express ourselves, we do not allow ourselves to be visible.”

Strategy vs. Energy: The Missing Piece

Here’s where most business advice gets it completely wrong. Everyone focuses on strategy – what to post, how to sell, when to launch. But Tracy revealed the real secret:

“All strategy works. Every single strategic effort available that everyone is touting works. The difference is who are you being when you work it? And that’s where the energy piece comes in.”

The Two Entrepreneurs Scenario

Picture this: Two entrepreneurs are running the exact same strategy – posting every day and doing three videos a week.

Entrepreneur #1 (Contracted Energy):

  • Proving themselves
  • Needy and attached
  • Chasing and worried about what others think
  • Judging themselves while creating
  • Shoulders shrunk, body tense

Entrepreneur #2 (Expanded Energy):

  • Doesn’t give a shit what anybody thinks
  • Here to share a message, not focused on themselves
  • In love with their work
  • Operating from trust and excitement
  • Chest open, heart up, confident posture

“That entrepreneur is going to have a vastly different success rate than the first one,” Tracy explained. “Because it’s not about the strategy, it’s about who you be when you execute the strategy.”

The Science Behind Energy and Success

This isn’t just woo-woo talk – there’s real science behind why energy affects your results. Tracy broke down the biology:

“You are 99.999% energy and only 0.0001% matter. Outside of your physical body, you emit through this field, your actual energy.”

When you’re contracted (stressed, worried, proving), you’re dysregulated. When you’re dysregulated, your nervous system thinks you need to run from a tiger, so it turns off your frontal lobe and prefrontal cortex.

“You don’t need to critically think or design a sales page when you’re running from a tiger,” Tracy pointed out. “So when we shift you and we go into an expansive state, you become regulated. So your prefrontal cortex lights up again and you’re like, ‘Oh fuck, that’s such a great idea.'”

This is why you get your best ideas in the shower – you’re open, relaxed, and your brain can actually function.

The Visualization That Changed My Life

I had to share this because it was so profound. Tracy once led me through a visualization where you walk up to a house and find the 89-year-old version of yourself sitting on a porch. You get to ask this future self questions about your life, your decisions, what really matters.

I was sobbing by the end because it completely shifted my perspective on everything. Instead of making decisions from my current limited identity, I started making them from the wisdom of my future self.

“It wasn’t Tracy in that day that made that choice,” she said about a major business decision. “It was the version of me who was 85 years old that’s going, ‘What the fuck are we doing with this thing?’ She leads. I don’t lead. She leads.”

Practical Steps to Start Shifting Your Energy

Tracy gave us two immediate practices you can start today:

1. Become a Non-Judgmental Observer

“You can’t read the label from inside the wine bottle,” she said. Imagine a hologram version of you that hangs out with you all day, lovingly noticing patterns without judgment.

  • Notice when you flip out on your husband: “That’s interesting.”
  • Notice when you say you’ll send a proposal but don’t: “That’s so interesting.”
  • The key is the tone – loving, curious, not critical.

2. Hand on Heart and Breathe

After you notice something, put your hand on your heart and breathe deeply.

“The amount of times that I watch a woman leader hold their breath… if I would put you in a pool and say, hold your breath for that long, you’d never be able to do it under the water. But when you’re moving about the cabin day to day doing your thing, you are literally just holding your breath.”

Breathe deeply and slowly until you feel a shift from contracted to expansive energy.

The School of Becoming: Where Transformation Happens

Tracy evolved her business from individual offerings into The School of Becoming – a comprehensive system that teaches what she calls “neuro identity evolution.”

“This isn’t about ‘Oh my God, I get it. And now what do I do?’ It’s like, ‘Come, I’m gonna show you every single moment.’ That’s what neuro identity evolution is. It’s me showing you how to evolve your identity at the level of your nervous system.”

The Three-Day Prowess Event

Tracy has a brand new event coming called Prowess (February 3rd, 4th, and 5th) that focuses on closing the gap between what you know and the results you get.

Day 1: Quit Talking Shit – alignment, integrity, and embodiment Day 2: Putting Fear on Your Team – understanding fear’s biology and learning to love it Day 3: Better Results for You and Your Clients – letting go of codependency and attachment

The Death Perspective That Changes Everything

Perhaps the most powerful part of our conversation was when Tracy shared her daily mindset practice:

“None of this is real and we’re all gonna die. Literally every day I think about it. I think that every day because I’m creating outside of my zone of predictability too, but none of it’s real and I’m gonna die. So go on, get after it, take the risk, say yes.”

This isn’t morbid – it’s liberating. When you really understand that this is all temporary, you stop being so clenched onto life and start actually living it.

The Bottom Line

Your business problems aren’t strategy problems – they’re identity problems. You can learn every tactic, follow every guru, and implement every system, but if you haven’t done the inner work to become the person who can receive that level of success, you’ll keep hitting the same ceiling.

The good news? This isn’t permanent. Identity can evolve. Your nervous system can be retrained. Your worthiness can be reclaimed.

But it requires you to stop looking outside yourself for the answer and start doing the inner work that actually creates lasting change.

As Tracy said: “You have had the fucking power the whole time. You just didn’t choose to learn how to use it.”

The question is: are you ready to stop letting fear run your business and start becoming the person who can handle the success you want?
